ViroStat, Portland, Maine, has released three new monoclonal antibodies to the Listeria species. The antibodies recognize all L. monocytogenes serotypes tested, as well as other Listeria species. Each vial contains 1.0 mL. The product contains no stabilizing proteins, and should be stored at 2–8º C. Listeria monocytogenes is a Gram-positive bacterium that causes the food-borne illness termed listeriosis. Pregnant women are especially at risk of transmitting the pathogen to their newborn, resulting in meningitis or bloodstream infection. L. monocytogenes has the ability to grow at refrigerated temperatures and thus can multiply in prepared foods and soft spreads/cheeses that are stored refrigerated.
