The agreement adds Abbott’s ID NOW system to the distributor’s portfolio, offering rapid point-of-care testing for respiratory infections and Strep A.
HSS Medical Supply has entered into a distribution agreement with Abbott to add the ID NOW rapid molecular testing platform to its diagnostic catalog, expanding point-of-care options.
The ID NOW system is a compact, instrument-based, CLIA-waived benchtop molecular testing platform designed for urgent care centers, physician offices, outpatient facilities, and clinics holding a Certificate of Waiver. The instrument processes single-patient assays, delivering results for influenza A and B, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and COVID-19 in 13 minutes or less, as well as group A Streptococcus results in under 6 minutes.
Targeted Amplification at the Point of Care
Unlike standard rapid antigen assays that identify surface proteins and typically show lower specificity, the ID NOW platform target-amplifies viral and bacterial genetic material. According to the manufacturer, this molecular method lowers false-negative rates, raising influenza diagnostic accuracy to above 96% and antigen detection accuracy from 81% to 87%.
The molecular approach also removes the requirement for reflex confirmatory culture testing after a negative Strep A result, helping clinical teams decrease administrative steps and follow-up workflows.
Because testing occurs during the consultation, providers can establish targeted treatment regimens in a single encounter, improving clinical workflow and helping curtail inappropriate antimicrobial prescriptions. From an operational perspective, molecular diagnostic CPT codes offer higher payer reimbursement rates compared to conventional antigen tests, assisting clinics in recovering operational testing expenses.
“Our goal has always been to equip healthcare providers with the highest-grade tools to deliver exceptional patient care. Adding Abbott’s ID NOW platform to our product portfolio allows us to offer practitioners a reliable, highly accurate diagnostic solution,” says Peter McCann, co-founder of HSS Medical Supply, in a release. “Cutting diagnostic time and accelerating treatments means more and more people get care early, before the condition worsens.”
Founded by McCann and Patrick Kiss, HSS Medical Supply officially launched operations in November 2025. The medical distributor supplies pharmaceuticals, equipment, and consumables to healthcare systems, regional hospitals, and outpatient clinics across New York, Massachusetts, North Carolina, and New Jersey.
