Freelite
Nephelometric assay
Freelite® is a rapid, nephelometric, or turbidimetric assay for the quantitation of free kappa and lambda light chains in the serum detects and monitors Multiple Myeloma (MM) and other B-cell dyscrasias. Affinity purified polyclonal antibodies, reacting specifically with the free forms of kappa and lambda light chain, are precoated onto latex particles. The greater sensitivity of these assays means that for the first time in routine practice, serum-free light chains can be detected and quantitated down to normal levels. Each kit provides components required to perform 100 free kappa or free lambda assays. Freelite is currently available for the Dade-Behring BNII and BN Prospec; the Beckman IMMAGE; the Roche Hitachi Modular P; the Olympus AU400, 640, 2700, 5400; the Bayer Advia 1650; and the SPAPLUS analyzer.

Sysmex XE-5000
Automated hematology system
The Sysmex XE-5000â„¢ Automated Hematology System by Sysmex, Mundelein, Ill, provides a high-throughput analyzer that supplies 31 whole blood reportable parameters, including advanced clinical parameters and a body fluid analysis mode offering seven additional parameters. Sysmex offers extended parameters that assist physicians with the medical management of platelet anomalies, infections, bone marrow transplantations, and diseases such as anemias and leukemias. Like its other X-Series counterparts, the XE-5000 uses fluorescent flow cytometry technology, imparting both clinical information on whole blood and body fluids rapidly and reliably. The body fluid-specific mode is the first of its kind in the industry, which includes reportable body fluid differential parameters for all common body fluids (CSF, serous, and synovial). Complete information within a single analysis reduces manual intervention and the errors inherent in manual counts.

CAPILLARYS Hemoglobin
Automated capillary electrophoresis
Capillary electrophoresis (CE) technology from Sebia Inc, Norcross, Ga, is innovative technology to aid in the diagnosis of hemoglobinopathy and thalassemia. The CAPILLARYSâ„¢ Hemoglobin assay provides a high-resolution separation of hemoglobins in order to detect and quantify normal and variant hemoglobins in one analysis. This technology allows for a separate migration of Hbs E, A2, and C; an accurate Hb A2 value even in the presence of Hbs S, E, and G-Philadelphia; and clear detection and quantitation of Hbs H, Bart’s, and Delta A2. A throughput of 34 samples per hour is realized. Direct analysis is performed from the bar-coded, primary tube on packed, unwashed red blood cells. Red cell hemolysate is automatically prepared on the instrument, sample migration occurs, and relative quantitation and presumptive identification of the hemoglobin fractions take place. Presumptive ID is facilitated by the presence of an onboard, drop-down hemoglobin variant library.
