The version 2.0 systems feature increased throughput, expanded assay flexibility, and the ability to run up to six unique assays per run.

Roche announced the US launch of its cobas 6800/8800 systems version 2.0 and software version 2.0.1, following US Food and Drug Administration 510(k) clearance earlier this year. The updated molecular diagnostics platforms aim to deliver enhanced laboratory efficiency through optimized resources, reduced downtime, and increased throughput capabilities.

The version 2.0 systems allow laboratories to run up to six unique assays per run, doubling the previous capacity of three assays. The platforms also support up to six assays per sample, expanding testing flexibility while maintaining the same laboratory footprint.

“This update is significant because it not only allows for new innovation in PCR-testing technology and more choices in omni-channel testing, but it also addresses some key improvements that customers have told us are high priorities for them,” says Brad Moore, president and CEO of Roche Diagnostics North America, in a release.

Simultaneous LDT and IVD Testing

A key feature of the updated systems is the ability to simultaneously run both laboratory developed tests and in-vitro dagnostic assays, which simplifies laboratory logistics and workflow management. The majority of the cobas test menu is available with the 2.0 release, providing laboratories with expanded testing options.

The cobas 6800 systems now offer an optional second analytic unit that boosts throughput to up to 2,112 tests per day. This enhancement supports laboratories managing increased testing volumes while adapting to changing priorities without workflow disruption.

Modernized Interface and Security Features

The updated systems include a modernized user interface designed to provide a unified user experience across the cobas molecular solutions family. The platforms incorporate innovations from Roche’s cobas 5800 system while delivering enhanced system security features.

The software upgrade can be applied to existing 6800/8800 systems, allowing current users to access the enhanced capabilities without requiring new hardware installations. This approach provides laboratories with higher throughput and increased flexibility while maintaining their existing equipment investments.

The cobas 6800/8800 systems target mid- to high-volume molecular testing laboratories seeking to address capacity and efficiency challenges. The updated platforms are designed to support laboratories managing diverse testing requirements while maintaining operational productivity.
