UniCel DxH 800 Coulter

Cellular analysis system

Beckman Coulter Inc, Fullerton, Calif, releases the UniCel® DxH 800 Coulter® cellular analysis system. Capturing 29 individual measurements per cell analyzed, the system provides improved sensitivity and specificity, which provides assessment of abnormal cell populations. The system’s physical design minimizes moving parts, increasing instrument reliability and technologist efficiency. Multiple systems can be connected easily into a work cell to meet the volume needs of a broad range of labs, from mid to very high volumes. The unique magnetic Specimen Transport Module transports cassettes between connected instruments with no track required.

CoolRack PF

Provides maximum temperature-shift rates

BioCision LLC, Mill Valley, Calif, launches the CoolRack PF (Profile Fit), which provides rapid and identical temperature-shift rates among samples in microfuge tubes. The CoolRack PF’s conical tube profile provides full contact between the thermo-conductive rack and each sample, maximizing cooling and heating rates. Snap freezing rates are as fast or faster than those obtained using dry ice alcohol slurry, and are highly reproducible in an indexed, hands-free, upright, and dry manner. Liquid nitrogen freezing with the device produces cryogenic freezing without liquid phase sample immersion. It is can be used for all temperature media, including ice, dry ice, liquid nitrogen, and water bath.

E-Man Hybrid

Improved manual pipetting

Mettler Toledo, Columbus, Ohio, launches the E-Man Hybrid, a new-generation pipette that incorporates the operational simplicity of a manual pipette with real-time sensing technology. The pipette allows for real-time monitoring of the piston’s position and the amount of liquid dispensed. It includes built-in GMP/GLP functions, such as saved calibration and service alerts, and a visual alert, which indicates inadequately executed pipetting cycles. The pipette also features the LTS Lite-Touch-System and a hand-friendly lightweight design.

Pathwork Tissue of Origin Test

Analyzes FFPE tissue

Pathwork Diagnostics Inc, Sunnyvale, Calif, has launched an additional version of the Pathwork® Tissue of Origin Test that has the capability of analyzing formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissue specimens. This molecular diagnostic test, which aids in the diagnosis of tumors with uncertain origins, is now available as a service through the CLIA-certified Pathwork Diagnostics Laboratory. To determine the tumor’s origin, the test uses microarray technology to measure the expression pattern in a tumor with an uncertain origin and compares it to expression patterns of a panel of 15 known tumor types. The FFPE version of the test will utilize the Pathchip® microarray, which runs on the Affymetrix GeneChip® System 3000Dx.

HBsAg and Anti-HBs

Hepatitis assays

Roche Diagnostics, Indianapolis, offers the newly FDA-approved HBsAg and Anti-HBs assays for use on the cobas® 6000 analyzer series and the cobas e 411 analyzer. The new assays help bring added efficiencies to the lab and promote further consolidation of clinical chemistry and immunoassay testing. Also, the addition of these assays on the cobas e 411 analyzer completes the availability of Roche’s hepatitis assays across the entire range of analyzers for low-, mid-, and high-volume testing. Both the HBsAg and Anti-HBs assays provide fast, 18-minute turnaround times and deliver high-performance results with Roche ECL technology.
