DWS Downflow Workstations

Recirculate airflow
The new DWS range of downflow workstations from Air Science USA, Fort Myers, Fla, operate at low noise levels and recirculate, helping to avoid exhausting air-conditioned and/or heated air in the atmosphere. The units provide a small bench-mounted unit with unrestricted access for operations that may be difficult to perform in a conventional fume hood. The downflow action takes the contaminated air away from the operator, and an alarm sounds when airflow falls to an unacceptable level. The main filter can be chosen from 14 different types of carbon, which include specialty media for vapors of organics, solvents, acids, mercury, and formaldehyde. HEPA filters for particulate filtration are available.

EZ1 Advanced

Alternative for nucleic acid purification
Qiagen, Valencia, Calif, introduces EZ1 Advanced®, a low-throughput alternative for nucleic acid purification with a new design that allows the unit to be stored in a laminar-flow cabinet. An ultraviolet lamp decontaminates the workstation’s inner surface. It features an automated sample-purification method for nonresearch settings such as molecular diagnostics and human identity testing. It measures 36.2 cm x 38.1 cm x 55.9 cm and weighs 23 kg. The product is intended for use only in combination with EZ1 advanced kits for applications described in the kit handbook. It is for CE in vitro diagnostic use in Europe in conjunction with EZ1 DSP Kits and is not available in the United States.

Fume Hood Panels

Larger than industry standard
Fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP) fume hood panels introduced by MFG Composite Systems Co, Ashtabula, Ohio, are chemical, fume, and smoke resistant to meet or exceed industry standards set by the Scientific Equipment and Furniture Association and Underwriters Laboratories, and they have been tested by an independent lab to meet American Society for Testing and Materials standards. The panels withstand exposure to a range of lab acids, solvents, and alkalis, and resist staining and discoloration. The proprietary oversized FRP composite sheet is 1.5 inches larger than the industry standard—49.5 inches x 97.5 inches, versus 48 inches x 96 inches. The larger sheet avoids fabrication objection by helping to provide a secure sheet around the edge during CNC machining.

Temperature and Humidity Data Loggers

Real-time data
Labs tracking temperature or humidity conditions affecting testing results can avail themselves of real-time data and the ability to download data for further analysis with the redesigned Graph-at-a-Glance flat-panel temperature and humidity data loggers from Dickson Co, Addison, Ill. The units are paperless chart recorders that provide a digital graph enabling medical lab managers to visualize environmental trends that can potentially affect clinical testing. Features include 36% greater data resolution in a 4.5 inch x 3.4-inch (114.3 mm x 86.36 mm) display screen, up to 37% price reduction, flash memory card data transfer capability, USB-enabled triple speed downloading, user-defined display settings, 32KB storage, and audiovisual alarms.
