Flocked Minitip Swabs
Hydrophilic and absorbent
Copan Diagnostics Inc, Murrieta, Calif, introduces three new styles of minitip-flocked swabs, which are hydrophilic and absorbent. The company’s patented flocking process sprays thousands of short nylon fibers onto an applicator tip in a perpendicular fashion. When the swab is used, liquid sample is absorbed between adjacent nylon strands by capillary action, and it is eluted when the swab tip is placed in liquid medium. The velvet brush-like texture of the tips, which are useful for respiratory virus diagnostics, help dislodge and collect virus-infected cells lining the nasopharynx. The product’s sample absorption and release may improve sensitivity of rapid direct antigen assays. Swabs are available in three styles: regular minitip, flexible shaft minitip, and ultrathin minitip. All models are comprised of plastic shafts featuring molded breakpoints with a painted red line, which aid in recognition of the correct break-point location. The product is available sterile in peel pouches or in dry prelabeled transport tubes.

Hype-Wipe
Bleach towelettes
Hype-Wipe bleach towelettes from Current Technologies, Crawfordsville, Ind, are EPA-registered with a 1-minute kill time for tuberculosis, streptococcus, salmonella, pseudomonas, vegetative cells of Clostridium difficile (C. diff); and a 2-minute kill time for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and vancomycin–resistant enterococcus. The product is registered as a one-step cleaner/disinfectant, and the individually packaged towels have passed the independent AOAC hard-surface disinfection test. The towelettes, which disinfect benchtops, equipment, and patient treatment areas, are saturated with the 1:10 dilution of sodium hypochlorite. They have an 18-month shelf life, and the expiration date is printed on every pouch. The product eliminates daily mixing of bleach. Full size (a pocket-size pouch) towelette unfolds to 6 inches x 12 inches) contains enough fluid to wipe down 40 square feet; the mini Hype-Wipe (3-inch x 3-inch towelette) is useful for wiping glucometers and small spills.
