Headlining the 2014 annual meeting of the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) will be a panel featuring several well-known healthcare experts who will help attendees stay abreast of changes occurring in the regulatory, compliance, and billing environment for pathology professionals.

Presented in collaboration with the American Pathology Foundation (APF), “Evolving Pressures on Laboratories in 2014 and Beyond” will take place on the final morning of the ASCP annual meeting, 10 October, at 11:30 am. The session will be moderated by Alfred Campbell, MD, FASCP, president of APF.

“With the profound changes occurring in healthcare today, it is critical that pathologists and laboratory practice managers sharpen their laboratory management skills to run efficient practices that enable them to improve the delivery of patient care,” says Campbell.

The panel will include prominent healthcare attorney Jane Pine Wood, Esq, and Michael Talbert, MD, FASCP, chairman of the department of pathology and director of the pathology residency program at the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine, and chief of pathology services at Oklahoma University Medical Center.

Pine Wood is a nationally recognized expert on compliance and regulatory issues facing pathology practices of all types. Talbert is known for presenting ways that today’s pathologists can prepare for and adapt to coming changes.

“It’s hard to stay abreast of all the changes occurring in the regulatory, compliance, and billing arenas,” says Campbell. “Our panel is designed to help attendees understand the latest developments in these areas—and to understand the need to be creative and experiment with new practice models that will help them adapt to whatever changes come in our industry.”

“This session—and the entire annual meeting—exemplifies more than ever ASCP’s mission to provide valuable career information and resources to help pathologists and laboratory professionals—from the time they begin training in their field, as they advance into leadership positions, and throughout their career—in recognition of their contributions to the profession,” says Zubair Baloch, MD, FASCP, chair of the annual meeting education working group and a member of the annual meeting steering committee.

ASCP is a medical professional society with more than 100,000 member board-certified anatomic and clinical pathologists, pathology residents and fellows, laboratory professionals, and students. ASCP provides excellence in education, certification, and advocacy on behalf of patients, pathologists, and laboratory professionals.

The ASCP annual meeting is the largest educational meeting for pathologists and laboratory professionals. ASCP 2014 is being held October 8–10 at the Tampa Convention Center, in Tampa, Fla. To learn more, visit ASCP.
