Confirmed detection of ESßL may indicate the presence of bacterial strains such as E. coli, K. pneumoniae and K. oxytoca that produce the ESßL enzyme and may be
clinically resistant to therapy with penicillins, cephalosporins and aztreonam. NCCLS standards recommend both screening and confirmation testing for potential ESßL-producing bacteria.
The new panel also provides susceptibility results for imipenem and meropenem, and for non-ESßL isolates.
