Multi-year collaboration will implement Epic’s Diagnostic Enterprise system across Quest’s national laboratory network to streamline provider and patient experiences.

Quest Diagnostics and Epic announced a collaboration to implement Epic’s suite of healthcare technologies across Quest’s national laboratory operations as part of the company’s multi-year Project Nova initiative.

The partnership will deploy Epic’s Diagnostic Enterprise system, including Aura, Beaker Laboratory, Care Everywhere, MyChart, and Resolute Professional Billing & Claims, across Quest’s network to enhance experiences for healthcare providers and patients using Quest’s laboratory testing services.

“Our collaboration with Epic will raise the bar on what health systems, providers, and their patients can expect from their lab experience,” says Jim Davis, chief executive officer, chairman, and president of Quest Diagnostics, in a release. “Aligning Epic’s leading healthcare technologies across our network will help us to optimize insights and experiences for customers and patients while also driving productivity across our enterprise.”

The implementation represents what the companies describe as the most extensive Epic integration by a laboratory provider. The system will be designed to benefit customers regardless of their electronic health record (EHR) platform.

Implementation Focus Areas

The multi-year phased implementation will prioritize seamless transitions for health systems, hospitals, and other providers. A cross-organization team with experience in large-scale implementations will lead the project.

Expected benefits for customers include faster and more convenient services, access to enhanced health insights, and improved turnaround times for some testing services. The simplified systems may also enable faster deployment of new innovations, including artificial intelligence and automation technologies.

“Together, Epic and Quest will make testing easier to navigate for patients while reducing friction for providers and health systems,” says Sumit Rana, president at Epic, in a release. “From creation of a single test list to a better patient experience with MyChart and more, this is an opportunity to transform the healthcare experience at a national scale.”

Technology Integration Strategy

The collaboration supports Quest’s Project Nova, a multi-year initiative aimed at simplifying and enhancing customer-facing processes to improve experiences, quality, and productivity for patients and providers across different EHR platforms.

“The best healthcare companies create innovative solutions that are convenient to access, easy to use and personalized,” says Murali Balakumar, senior vice president and chief information and digital officer at Quest Diagnostics, in a release. “We are focused on delivering these kinds of solutions across our entire portfolio, leveraging Epic as a foundational technology collaborator, so patients and providers can seamlessly engage with us for their labs and other health insights.”
