Powered by Tribun Health’s CaloPix software, the platform connects pathology with radiology and cardiology imaging systems to support diagnostic workflows and collaboration across healthcare networks.

Hyland has launched Hyland Digital Pathology, an enterprise-level medical imaging solution powered by Tribun Health that unifies pathology workflows with existing healthcare imaging systems. The platform enables health systems to integrate multiple imaging specialties, including radiology, cardiology, and pathology, into a single governed architecture rather than managing disconnected departmental archives.

The launch comes at a key time for laboratory medicine, according to a release from the company. Approximately 90% of diagnostic pathology laboratories still rely on manual glass slides, even as clinical laboratories face an estimated 42% surge in diagnostic workloads driven by precision medicine, according to research cited by Hyland. Combined with ongoing pathologist workforce shortages, these operational pressures have exacerbated diagnostic turnaround delays across healthcare networks.

“Pathology belongs at the core of an enterprise medical imaging strategy,” says Vinitha Ramnathan, senior vice president and general manager of healthcare product management at Hyland, in a release. “With Hyland Digital Pathology, we’re helping health systems move beyond isolated workflows to connect pathology with radiology and cardiology on a scalable, governed imaging foundation. This gives pathologists the tools to collaborate across locations and brings critical diagnostic information closer to the teams making care decisions.”

Architecture and Regulatory Status

Powered by Tribun Health’s CaloPix platform, the system holds FDA clearance, Health Canada licensing, CE-Marking, and Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods inclusion as a Class 1 software IVD medical device for primary diagnosis.

Built on vendor-neutral archiving, universal viewing, and standards-based interoperability, the offering includes several core components:

  • CaloPix Image Management System: A pathology-native diagnostic engine designed for primary diagnosis, case management, and AI-assisted analysis within a pathologist-centered interface.
  • Enterprise Medical Imaging Integration: Integration via Acuo VNA and NilRead extends universal viewing and vendor-neutral storage across specialties, while TeleSlide supports remote consultations and telepathology without requiring physical slide transport.
  • Interoperability and AI Readiness: An open AI framework incorporating human-in-the-loop governance connects to laboratory information systems and electronic medical records using DICOM standards.

“Digital pathology cannot scale as an isolated departmental project,” says Jean-François Pomerol, CEO of Tribun Health, in a release. “By bringing CaloPix into Hyland’s enterprise imaging ecosystem, we are creating a practical path for healthcare organizations to modernize pathology while preserving the specialized workflows, clinical governance and regulatory rigor that diagnosis demands.”

Operational and Clinical Implications

For hospital laboratories and pathology departments, the integration addresses key challenges associated with large-scale whole slide imaging data. Hyland’s VNA infrastructure operates at petabyte scale, providing intelligent data tiering to control storage costs and reduce redundant hardware across multi-site health networks.

By unifying pathology with radiology and other diagnostic disciplines into a single access layer, multidisciplinary tumor boards and care teams can evaluate clinical images simultaneously. In addition, the platform’s remote diagnostic capabilities support flexible workflow models intended to alleviate administrative workload and assist laboratories facing specialist staffing shortages.

Hyland will showcase the platform through hands-on demonstrations at the RSNA 2026 annual meeting in Chicago, running Nov 29 through Dec 2.
