This is a companion article to the feature, “HEOR for Diagnostics.”

It would be a mistake to draw the conclusion, based on the Quest Diagnostics research, that more genes tested correlates necessarily with greater value. While multigene test panels have value, having too many genes in a multigene panel may provide information that is not clinically meaningful, or is potentially confusing for the physician and patient.

The test should strive to achieve the right balance between too many and too few genes. Testing that provides well-characterized, guideline-supported, evidence-based, and actionable information may provide greater value.
