A new saliva-based test that can predict a person’s risk of developing different kinds of cancers and other serious diseases is now available in the U.S.

GeneType is a non-invasive test that hopes to increase awareness around a number of different life-threatening diseases, allow people to know if they may be at high risk, and catch it early even when there is no family history.

“This is cutting edge technology that will in turn save lives,” Genetic Technologies CEO Simon Morriss says. “By catching things early, people’s survival rates are dramatically increased. This is one of the most amazing developments that will re-shape preventative healthcare for the future.”

The test allows people with or without any family history to check their likelihood of developing things such as breast, ovarian, colon, and prostate cancer as well as heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

A person’s DNA is extracted from the sample, this combined with their age, family and medical history are evaluated and a risk profile is built.

“It’s as simple as jumping on to GeneType.com or going to visit your GP and asking for a GeneType test,” Morriss says.

The results take around 20 days to be processed and once they have been determined, can be shared with an individual’s healthcare provider.
