The IntelliXcap M6 device allows operators to decap or recap an entire column of tubes in seconds with consistent torque control.

Azenta Life Sciences has launched the IntelliXcap M6 Semi-Automated Handheld Screw Cap Decapper, designed specifically for 48-format external thread screw cap tubes.

The device allows operators to decap or recap an entire column of 48-format tubes in seconds while maintaining precise, consistent torque across every cap, according to a release from the company. The semi-automated handheld operation is designed to minimize manual effort and reduces the risk of over- or under-tightening, which can compromise sample integrity.

“By introducing this model alongside our existing M8, 96-format version, we are providing laboratories that work with 48-formats with greater flexibility to match the right level of automation to their throughput needs, without compromising on sample integrity or consistency,” says Sofia Peniche Maria, senior global product manager for consumables and instruments, in a release.

Ergonomic Design for Extended Use

The IntelliXcap M6 features a lightweight design intended to reduce repetitive strain during extended periods of use. The company says the device includes intuitive controls and single-action workflow capabilities for processing samples in research, clinical, and biobanking environments.

For laboratories where 48-format automation exceeds workflow requirements, the six-channel configuration provides an alternative to fully automated systems while maintaining precision and control on a smaller scale. The device includes a docking station for charging, storage, and secure cap handling, and can operate both with a mains power connection or cordless.

Addressing Manual Handling Challenges

Screw cap tubes are standard in many modern laboratories for storing biological and chemical samples due to their secure sealing and durability. However, manual cap handling remains time-consuming and ergonomically demanding, according to Azenta.

The IntelliXcap M6 addresses this challenge by offering torque-controlled processing that supports consistent sample handling across low to mid-throughput applications in genomics, clinical research, and biobanking.

“We designed the IntelliXcap platform to deliver accessible, scalable automation that enhances laboratory workflows at every throughput level,” says Peniche Maria in a release. “The M6 underscores that commitment and continues that vision, helping labs of any size improve their workflows through smart, semi-automated technology.”
