The apolipoprotein E (Apo E) assay is simple and sensitive. It utilizes an in vitro turbidimetric methodology that can be automated using existing chemistry instruments. Apo E uses an antihuman antibody, which combines specifically with Apo E in the sample and yields an insoluble aggregate. The amount of Apo E is proportional to the turbidity in the sample, and is measured optically at 340/700 nm.
