BioSpec-nano

Spectrophotometer

BioSpec-nano, from Shimadzu Scientific Instruments, Columbia, Md, is a dedicated spectrophotometer for the quantitation of nucleic acids that helps conserve precious samples and obtain accurate and reproducible results made possible by an automated precision drive mechanism. The spectrophotometer requires only 1 µL (path length: 0.2 mm) or 2 µL (path length: 0.7 mm) of sample, which can be pipetted onto the measurement plate. For ultrasmall sample volumes no standard rectangular cell is needed, although for applications that are not volume-limited an optional rectangular cell adapter is available. Sample measurement time is 3 seconds.

HDL-C Reagent Application

For the Beckman Coulter Unicel DxC 600 Synchron analyzer

Pointe Scientific Inc, Canton, Mich, has introduced a new user-defined application for the quantitative determination of HDL Cholesterol on the Beckman Coulter UniCel® DxC 600 Synchron® analyzer. The Liquid autoHDL™ Cholesterol assay is a homogeneous two-reagent method for directly measuring serum HDL-C levels without the need for offline pretreatment. The first reagent contains a-cyclodextrin and dextran sulfate to stabilize LDL-C, VLDL, and chylomicrons. The second reagent contains PEG-modified enzymes that selectively react with the cholesterol present in the HDL particles. Consequently, only the HDL cholesterol is subject to cholesterol measurement.

FISH Test Module

For the NovoPath platform

Novovision, Princeton, NJ, introduces a new fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) test module for its NovoPath™ AP lab workflow-management, specimen-tracking, and reporting platform. The new module eliminates the need to manually score Urovysion FISH results on paper charts and scan these in as attachments to electronic patient files. Results are scored digitally, and data can be fully integrated into standard urine cytology test data as well as the comprehensive patient file for immediate reporting and future reference. The new application digitally charts FISH results and includes historical trend graphs for a comprehensive AP lab report, streamlining review by referring physicians.

Immersion Oil

For fluorescence microscopy

Cargille Immersion Oil type 37DF, from Cargille Laboratories, Cedar Grove, NJ, is specially designed to give the proper optical values at 37°C to give a sharp image. Immersion oil standardized for room temperature at 23°C may cause a decrease in resolution when used at 37°C, as critical optical values of the oil change with temperature. In addition, type 37DF, like type DF (used at 23°C), has very low background fluorescence, making it ideal for fluorescence microscopy at 37°C; original immersion oil type 37 is also designed for use at 37°C, but has a higher background fluorescence. The oil comes in 1-, 4-, and 16-ounce bottles.
