BioTek, Winooski, Vt, introduces the Synergy™ 2 Alpha microplate reader, which provides high-performance Alpha detection for low- to medium-throughput laboratories. The reader comes preconfigured with the Alpha filter set, mirrors, software, and optical modules to read all Alpha assays, and can be upgraded with additional detection modes. In addition to Alpha assay specificity, the single-mode microplate reader is integrated with Gen5™ Data Analysis Software for advanced reader control, data analysis, graphing, and reporting features. An informational Alpha assay CD is also included, and contains Alpha-based application notes, Gen5 sample data files, and preprogrammed Gen5 sample protocols.

Copan, Murrieta, Calif, launches new features of its Walk-Away Specimen Processor (WASP®). The new Gram SlidePrep™ is a module designed to prepare a Gram slide after the sample has been inoculated onto culture plates by the instrument and to permanently inkjet the patient’s bar code and specimen descriptors directly onto the glass slide. The inkjet labeling withstands all solvents and reagents used during processing, eliminating the need for a paper label. The WASP can now also inoculate enrichment broths, like LIM and Selenite, and can automatically place a bar code on tubed media, while simultaneously processing plated media at the same time.
