The media was developed using Shepherd’s U9 urease color base formulation and then modified by S. Madoff to enhance growth and identification. The addition of phenol red to the agar medium indicates an alkaline shift in the presence of growth, turning the medium from yellow to pink.
This media was specifically formulated for Ureaplasma urealyticum. It has excellent recovery with an easy-to-read color reaction in 24 to 48 hours when incubated anaerobically.
