Siemens Healthineers, Berlin, has offered a peek into the future of lab automation with the unveiling of its Atellica Solution, a highly flexible clinical chemistry and immunoassay solution featuring patented bidirectional magnetic sample-transport technology that is 10 times faster than conventional conveyors.
Now undergoing FDA premarket notification (510(k)) review, and not available for sale, the Atellica Solution was unveiled during the 2016 annual meeting of the American Association for Clinical Chemistry, in Philadelphia. The preview identified a range of features that the company has set as part of the development design goals for the system, even though some features may not be incorporated into the final version of the system.

“We engineered the Atellica Solution based on extensive research of market trends and our customer needs,” says Franz Walt, president of laboratory diagnostics at Siemens Healthineers. “The result is a game-changer that delivers control and simplicity, so our customers can focus on driving better business and clinical outcomes and spend less time managing operations.”
In addition to the speed afforded by the patented Atellica Magline transport technology, the Atellica Solution is expected to offer a multicamera vision system and intelligent sample routing for independent control over every sample. The system can handle more than 30 types of sample containers, including pediatric and special containers.
Atellica’s single immunoassay analyzer is expected to be capable of processing more than 400 tests per hour, depending on the test mix in use, delivering the highest productivity per square meter when compared with leading competitors in the in vitro diagnostics industry.
Further, the same reagents can be used across configurations and locations, simplifying laboratory operations, streamlining inventory control, and enabling consistent testing results. Other benefits of the Atellica Solution are expected to include remote-access monitoring and control to maximize uptime, and a broad, expanding assay menu using proven detection technologies.
The Atellica Solution is the first in a new line of Atellica products to be engineered by Siemens Healthineers. According to Siemens, the Atellica Solution will provide unprecedented flexibility to adapt to growing testing needs and space constraints. The solution can be used as a standalone system or combined into more than 300 customizable configurations, including L-shaped, U-shaped, and linear formations. It can also be connected to Siemens Aptio automation systems for a comprehensive multidisciplinary solution.
