The next-generation platform adds a touchscreen interface and redesigned software while laying the foundation for higher-plex testing and next-generation sequencing workflows.
Cepheid will unveil the third generation of its GeneXpert system at the Association for Diagnostics & Laboratory Medicine (ADLM) Annual Scientific Meeting on July 28. The next-generation system is designed to expand PCR-based testing capabilities while preserving the simplicity, flexibility, and reliability of previous models.
At launch, the new system will support Cepheid’s menu of Food and Drug Administration-cleared tests and the existing laboratory workflows that facilities currently use. The updated hardware includes a fully integrated touchscreen interface, redesigned software, and a more intuitive user experience.
“Healthcare providers increasingly need access to different types of molecular testing, yet those capabilities are often spread across multiple instruments and workflows,” says Connie Savor, chief medical officer at Cepheid, in a release. “The third-generation GeneXpert system is designed to bring a broader spectrum of molecular diagnostic capabilities onto a single system, helping clinicians access the insights they need to make informed decisions across the continuum of care.”
The system is designed to eventually support new applications, including high-plex panel testing, faster results, and sample-to-answer solutions for next-generation sequencing workflows. Like all previous versions of the technology—such as those used for mpox testing—the new system uses random-access testing, which allows laboratories to process samples as they arrive instead of in batches. This provides laboratories the flexibility to prioritize urgent tests and maintain access to results across various healthcare settings.
“We designed the third-generation GeneXpert system to support increasingly sophisticated molecular diagnostics while maintaining the simplicity, scalability, and ease of use that customers expect from GeneXpert systems,” says James Green, chief technology officer at Cepheid, in a release.
The first version of the system to launch will be a compact four-module configuration. Cepheid expects to begin shipping this model to US customers in the coming months. Other configurations, including GeneXpert Infinity systems and versions with higher capacity, are currently in development.
