UniCel i class

Integrated work cells

Beckman Coulter Inc, Fullerton, Calif, introduces three new chemistry/immunoassay integrated work cells: the UniCel DxC 660i, the UniCel DxC 680i, and the UniCel 860i Synchron® Access® Clinical Systems, dubbed UniCel i class. The UniCel i class integrated systems receive samples from a single point of entry. Samples are automatically aliquoted and routed for analysis across both aspects of the platform. Chemistry analysis on the primary sample is concurrent to immunoassay analysis of the aliquot. Each of the integrated systems is configured to meet a different level of throughput and features the company’s ClozCap™ automated closed-tube aliquotting and sampling technology. The work cells offer a comprehensive menu of more than 150 different tests, ranging from cardiac and tumor markers to tests for renal function, diabetes, and more.

T Cell Fx and MBL Pathway Function Tests

Evaluates response of patients’ immune systems

IBT Laboratories, Lenexa, Kan, launches both the T Cell Fx™ test and the Mannan Binding Lectin (MBL) pathway function test to evaluate the response of patients whose immune systems may be compromised for a variety of reasons. The MBL pathway function test evaluates the effectiveness of the MBL pathway, which is useful for assessing children with persistent, recurrent infections to determine whether their innate immune system is compromised, and for managing transplant and oncology patients by identifying when prophylactic measures are appropriate. The T Cell Fx test provides a complete evaluation of the ability of a patient’s T cells to protect from viruses, yeast, and bacteria. The test looks at peripheral blood mononuclear cells from whole blood to help physicians identify primary immunodeficiency in children with recurrent infections.

PCS Pipette Calibration System

Uses photometric method

The PCS® Pipette Calibration System from Artel, Westbrook, Me, can calibrate pipettes used for qPCR applications. The PCS is able to verify the performance of pipettes when handling low volumes with a high degree of accuracy and precision. It is based on ratiometric photometry, which measures the absorbance of light by two proprietary dye solutions to verify volume. The use of this photometric method increases the accuracy of the measurements and eliminates sources of error associated with the use of balances. The system is portable, allowing for benchtop calibration at the site where pipettes are used. The PCS automatically documents all volume-verification results for streamlined and rigorous quality control.
