Helmer Scientific, Noblesville, Ind, a manufacturer of cold storage products, has expanded its GX Solution line of refrigerators to include upright models. The medical-grade upright refrigerators are designed for noise-sensitive areas such as medication rooms, pharmacies, laboratories, and patient rooms. The new GX Solutions have a noise output quieter than conventional units by a factor of 3. The medical-grade product line focuses on optimizing temperature, noise, and energy management. GX Solutions units use the company’s proprietary OptiCool cooling technology, pairing a variable capacity compressor (VCC) and naturally occurring hydrocarbon (HC) refrigerants. In order to maintain temperature, VCCs run at variable speeds depending on the operating conditions, which are monitored using intelligent sensors. For example, the VCC runs at a higher speed when the door of the unit is open to deliver optimal temperature performance. When the temperature stabilizes, the VCC runs at a lower speed.

Additionally, the OptiCool system uses a natural refrigerant that is environmentally friendly, having no impact on ozone depletion and eliminating gases targeted under the Environmental Protection Agency’s significant new alternatives policy (SNAP), the Paris Climate Agreement, the Montreal Protocol, and the European Union’s F-gas initiative.
GX Solutions units manage three key temperature areas: uniformity, recovery, and stability. Achieving temperature uniformity throughout the unit by keeping temperatures within ±1° C ensures that contents are stored at the right temperature regardless of where they are placed in the unit. In addition, GX Solutions recover faster than conventional technologies after prolonged door openings. These units are also able to maintain temperature stability, creating fewer deviations to avoid significant changes in temperature. The temperature management solutions ensure the protection of sensitive clinical and scientific products such as blood therapies, medications, vaccines, and patient specimens.
All GX Solutions refrigerator models are Energy Star certified. The refrigerators are at least 50% more energy efficient than conventional medical-grade refrigerators. Heat output is also reduced by 30% to 50% compared with traditional refrigeration technology, limiting the impact of HVAC systems.
