The collaboration aims to develop automated tests that use blood samples to detect signals of neurological conditions.


NanoSomiX and Beckman Coulter Diagnostics have entered a collaboration to explore the development of next-generation immunoassays for neurodegenerative diseases. The partnership focuses on addressing challenges in detecting low-abundance, brain-specific biomarkers in blood.

The companies are utilizing a platform from NanoSomiX that isolates extracellular vesicles (EVs) derived from specific brain cell populations, including neurons and glial cells.

“EVs—particularly brain-derived EVs—offer a non-invasive way to access meaningful signals from the brain using a small volume of blood,” says Dr Dennis Van Epps, vp, scientific affairs at NanoSomiX, in a release. “NanoSomiX has developed EV-based immunoassays that measure biomarkers from neuron- and other brain cell–derived EVs, supporting research into disease mechanisms, progression, and therapeutic response.”

The collaboration with Beckman Coulter Diagnostics is intended to help translate these EV-based immunoassays into automated and scalable solutions for use in both research and clinical laboratory settings.

NanoSomiX has published research regarding its immunoassay platforms, which are designed to be compatible with high-throughput testing systems. According to the company, this compatibility positions the technology as a foundation for translational research and the development of scalable assays.

The company currently works with academic and commercial partners on research involving EVs derived from neurons, astrocytes, and oligodendrocytes. These efforts are intended to advance biomarker discovery and validation across a range of neurological conditions and injuries.
