SPAPLUS Analyzer

For serum/plasma protein analysis

The SPAPLUS™, from The Binding Site, Birmingham, UK, is a fully supported, dedicated, and reliable serum and plasma protein analyzer that complements both the specialist Freelite and IgG subclass assays. It features automated rerun, autodilution, antigen excess check, and Freelite ratio calculation, and includes a bidirectional interface and Windows®-based software. A combination of air mixing, which helps to eliminate sample carryover, dual compartment cuvettes, and the acid/alkali/hot water wash, results in increased precision and assay performance, especially for latex assays. Recent additions to the assay panel include IgA subclasses (IgA1 and IgA2), IgD, and Beta 2 Microglobulin.

BinaxNOW PBP2a Test

Detects penicillin-binding protein 2a (PBP2a) found in MRSA

AdvanDx, Wobum, Mass, will offer the BinaxNOW® PBP2a test from Inverness Medical Innovations Inc, Waltham, Mass, to customers in the United States. The test provides rapid detection of the penicillin-binding protein 2a (PBP2a) present in methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) directly from S. aureus positive blood cultures. By combining rapid and accurate S. aureus identification from PNA FISH and reflexing to PBP2a detection in MRSA using BinaxNOW PBP2a, the test enables laboratories to provide results 24 hours sooner than with conventional methods. In clinical studies, the test demonstrated 97.1% positive agreement and 100% negative agreement with conventional methods for detecting MRSA.
