Computype Inc, St Paul, Minn, which specializes in labware identification, introduces the Spirit 2100 portable printing system, a battery-powered, handheld device that features thermal transfer printing for permanent labels used in lab applications such as labeling tubes, vials, plates, and slides.

As the label is created, the text is displayed on an LCD screen showing an outline of the label. Users can change text sizes, import graphic images, change fonts, and choose from several print sizes before printing.

The unit can be synched to a PC to download data files from Excel and other Windows-compatible databases. An edit-logging feature keeps track of printed labels and downloads printed information back to the PC.
