Stat-Site M β-HB System

Specific for beta-hydroxybutyrate

The Stat-Site M β-HB System from Stanbio Laboratory, Boerne, Tex, improves on the original Stat-Site/KetoSite platform for the quantitative determination of beta-hydroxybutyrate in serum or plasma. The test, which is specific for beta-hydroxybutyrate, is not affected by interfering substances, and shows linearity of up to 7.0 mmol/L. The system employs a small glucose-type meter and a β-HB test card. The card is placed in the meter, and a drop of serum or plasma is placed in the sample well. The β-HB result is displayed in about 1 minute. The meter uses a code key to calibrate different lots of test cards. Using this method, beta-hydroxybutyrate in the presence of NAD is converted to acetoacetate and NADH at pH 8.5 by beta-hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase. The NADH produced reacts with INT in the presence of diaphorase to produce a color, and is read by reflectance photometry. The system includes the STAT-Site M β-HB meter and β-HB test cards. Controls and linearity material are available separately. The product is pending FDA approval.

Compliance-Max

Three-point calibrations

The Compliance-Max from Dickson Co, Addison, Ill, provides A2LA-accredited NIST-traceable three-point calibrations that include both before-and-after calibration data. The device offers CDC, JCAHO, and FDA compliance. The calibrations, combined with a calibration club buddy system designee, demonstrate that instruments retain original operating specifications and that standard operating procedures ensure that they do. The club is an automatic calibration reminder service for NIST-certified instruments of calibration schedules that must be followed to keep data loggers and chart recorders operating at original specifications. It anticipates changes that might prevent the primary enrollee from following up on calibration reminders. Enrollees can include a coworker for back-up calibration reminders.

Traceable Spatula Balance

Digital display

The new Traceable Spatula Balance Control from Control Co, Friendswood, Tex, scoops material and instantly displays weight. A balance with a digital display is located in the handle. The weighing range is 0 to 300 grams and 0 to 10.580 ounces. Readability is 0.1 gram and 0.005 ounce. Level position repeatability is 0.1 gram, and accuracy is ±0.2 gram or 0.25%. Three-position soft-touch keys in the handle tares, holds (freezes the display), and changes grams/ounces. LCD indicates low battery. The scoop design reduces spilling. It holds 32 mL/1.1 fluid ounces, and the scoop volume is 32 cubic cm/1.95 cubic inches. The device transfers and weighs crystals, granulated material, solids, liquids, precipitates, and chemicals. An individually serial-numbered traceable certificate is supplied to indicate traceability to standards provided by the National Institute of Standards and Technology. Chemical/corrosion-resistant ABS plastic construction allows transferring materials without sticking. The device measures 9 inches x 2 inches x 1 inch, and weighs 3 ounces. The company is ISO 9001 quality certified by DNV, and an ISO 17025 calibration laboratory accredited by A2LA.

CoaguChek XS Plus System

Stores 500 results

The new CoaguChek XS Plus system from Roche Diagnostics Corp, Indianapolis, offers built-in controls and optional, external liquid controls to help nonwaived clinics monitoring anticoagulation provide PT/INR (clotting time) test results for patients taking blood thinner medication. The handheld, battery-powered system stores up to 500 patient and/or liquid quality control results that can be searched by patient, date, and time. The meter provides data-management connectivity with patient ID, operator lockout, and quality control lockouts. It is pending CLIA waiver approval by the FDA. The device performs two levels of onboard quality controls in a single test chamber as part of every PT/INR test. The CoaguChek PT test strip neutralizes therapeutic levels of heparin and low-molecular-weight heparin, allowing physicians to do point-of-care testing on a range of anticoagulated patients. It provides results in 1 minute from a 10-µL drop of blood obtained from a fingerstick. CoaguChek XS Plus PT controls, the optional external liquid quality controls, include a code chip and eight bottles of liquid quality controls (four Level 1 bottles and four Level 2 bottles)—which allow laboratorians to independently test the company’s system. Performing PT/INR testing at the point of care allows health care professionals to make dosage adjustments and talk with patients, which may help protect patients from potentially serious complications.
