The LSI PML/RARA Dual Color, Dual Fusion Translocation Probe incorporates this companys patented FISH (fluorescence in situ hybridization) technology to enable laboratory researchers to detect a reciprocal and balanced translocation event between chromosomes 15 and 17 in certain types of leukemia. Specifically, the probe detects a translocation with breakpoints in the PML (promyelocytic leukemia) gene on chromosome 15q22 and the RARA (retinoic acid receptor alpha) gene on chromosome 17q21.1. The resulting fusion genes on the derivative 15 and derivative 17 chromosomes encode two functional chimeric proteins: PML-RARA and RARA-PML.
The new LSI PML/RARA Dual Color, Dual Fusion Translocation Probe complements two existing products, the LSI PML/RARA Dual Color Translocation Probe and the LSI RARA Dual Color, Break Apart Rearrangement Probe, that detect genetic aberrations (translocations or other rearrangements) at either the PML gene region (15q22) on chromosome 15 or the RARA gene region (17q21.1) on chromosome 17.
