Advances in testing for hepatitis B virus (HBV) may soon add a new layer of complexity to an already complicated array of assay choices clinicians have to detect HBV and monitor its treatment. The newest HBV test under evaluation is the quantitative hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) assay, which may offer another option for early detection of HBV infection and for monitoring patients with a history of infection.
New therapies for hepatitis C virus (HCV) are also likely to change the way laboratory tests for HCV are used to monitor treatment in the near future. According to a recent article in CAP Today (June 2011), promising new protease inhibitors are so effective that they are expected to "transform the treatment of hepatitis C," resulting in more viral load testing and molecular testing in the HCV arena.
