The new triple quadrupole gas chromatograph mass spectrometer incorporates artificial intelligence and automated method creation to improve laboratory workflows.


Shimadzu Scientific Instruments introduced the GCMS-TQ RX Series, a triple quadrupole gas chromatograph mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) system designed to provide reliable analysis for various applications. The series combines the company’s hardware platform with automated workflows and software to help laboratories manage analytical demands.

The GCMS-TQ8050 RX Series features a newly developed detector that uses noise-reduction technologies and high amplification performance to maintain sensitivity. This system also uses a dual off-axis configuration to reduce background noise from uncharged particles, which improves signal clarity and analytical reliability, according to a release from Shimadzu Scientific Instruments.

Automated Analysis and Software Features

To simplify workflows, the series includes Peakintelligence for GCMS, an artificial intelligence-based peak processing algorithm. This tool is designed to reduce the time required for peak processing. The system also uses Smart MRM+ to automatically create optimized analytical methods, enabling quantitative analysis for simultaneous scan and multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) analysis.

The LabSolutions Explore software platform integrates data processing, spectral library searching, and quantitative workflows into a single environment. Additionally, the LabSolutions Insight software is intended to reduce the time needed for multi-sample data analysis.

The series enables real-time monitoring of the instrument’s operating status and the estimated completion time for consecutive analyses, as well as displaying the remaining time of the analysis during instrument start-up and shutdown, according to the company.

Operational Features and Maintenance

The GCMS-TQ RX Series includes a multimode injection unit to improve operational efficiency and method development. The system uses proprietary thermal insulation technology to achieve high temperature stability and rapid heating and cooling.

For maintenance, the series is equipped with the Easy sTop function. This allows operators to perform maintenance on the sample injection port safely without releasing the vacuum.

Reducing Helium Consumption

The series addresses gas usage with a standard carrier gas saver function to reduce consumption during analysis. An optional gas selector is also available, which allows laboratories to switch the carrier gas from helium to nitrogen during standby periods.

The GCMS-TQ8050 RX Series databases are pre-populated with compounds required for each application, which allows users to start analysis immediately, says Shimadzu Scientific Instruments in a release.
