The collaboration will use artificial intelligence to extract insights from laboratory data, pathology reports, and other clinical records to support real-world research in inflammatory bowel disease and MASH.

Century Health and GI Partners of Illinois have announced a strategic partnership to develop a real-world data ecosystem aimed at advancing research in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH).

The collaboration will utilize Century Health’s artificial intelligence (AI) abstraction model, known as CHARM, to extract clinical insights from structured and unstructured data. This includes laboratory data, pathology reports, physician notes, imaging, and endoscopy reports that typically require manual abstraction, according to a press release from Century Health.

The companies intend to build an extensive independent gastroenterology real-world data ecosystem involving tens of thousands of patients. The initiative aims to support research across gastrointestinal diseases and create opportunities to improve patient outcomes through evidence-based innovation.

Supporting Clinical Research and Pharmaceutical Innovation

The findings will be leveraged for collaborations with life sciences organizations, academic researchers, and pharmaceutical companies. These entities seek high-quality longitudinal data to better understand disease progression, treatment effectiveness, and real-world patient outcomes.

“As healthcare continues its transformation through artificial intelligence, data has become one of the most valuable assets in advancing patient care,” says Dr Geogy Vennikandam, CEO of GI Partners of Illinois, in a release. “Together, we have the opportunity to accelerate discoveries, support pharmaceutical innovation, and ultimately improve the lives of the patients we are privileged to serve.”

Century Health uses proprietary large language models and clinical AI to extract clinical variables from patient records. The company’s technology has demonstrated clinical abstraction accuracy approaching expert-level performance while reducing the time required to generate research-ready datasets, according to the company.

Addressing Gaps in IBD and MASH Research

IBD and MASH are areas of active innovation in gastroenterology. While new IBD therapies are emerging, patients often cycle through multiple treatment lines before finding effective options. MASH treatments are also evolving, with glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) therapies showing early promise.

Understanding these patient journeys requires longitudinal, real-world data to help clinicians determine effective treatments and move patients to appropriate therapies faster.

“Developing an in-depth understanding of complex diseases like IBD and MASH requires partnering with practices where patients are actually cared for day to day,” says Vish Srivastava, co-founder and CEO of Century Health, in a release. “GI Partners of Illinois has built one of the most sophisticated independent GI practices in the country, and working closely with their team gives us a real opportunity to generate evidence that makes a difference for patients.”
