The multipurpose system succeeds the Centrifuge 5810 R, featuring updated sustainable cooling technology and broad rotor compatibility.
Eppendorf has launched the Centrifuge 5811 R, a refrigerated, multipurpose benchtop centrifuge designed to support a wide range of laboratory workflows, according to a company press release. The new unit succeeds the Centrifuge 5810 R, introducing a refreshed design, an updated user interface, and sustainable cooling technology.
The Centrifuge 5811 R uses R290 propane as a refrigerant, offering a global warming potential of 0.02 and an ozone depletion potential of 0 to support laboratory environmental initiatives, according to the release. Eppendorf states that the instrument helps reduce operational power consumption through an ECO shut-off feature, energy-efficient FastTemp technology, and aerodynamic bucket designs. The system operates at temperatures ranging from -9 °C to +40 °C to safeguard temperature-sensitive samples, according to the manufacturer.
“The refrigerated Centrifuge 5811 R is a benchtop system for labs where a single centrifuge needs to support many workflows in parallel,” says Dr Tim Schommarzt, global marketing manager, Eppendorf Group, in a release. “Tubes in the morning, plates in the afternoon, bottles for the next experiment – the Centrifuge 5811 R brings this capacity together in one reliable instrument. It combines broad rotor flexibility, high capacity, and sustainable cooling technology in a compact footprint that fits into virtually any lab.”
Capacity, Performance, and Applications
With a capacity of up to 3 L and maximum separation speeds reaching 20,913 × g (14,000 rpm), the instrument supports multiple vessel formats within a single benchtop footprint, according to the company. Its portfolio comprises 15 rotors and an extensive selection of adapters, allowing fixed-angle and swing-bucket configurations, as well as mixed bucket loading to accommodate varied formats in a single run, Eppendorf states in a release.
According to the company, the centrifuge supports workflows including nucleic acid and protein purification, peripheral blood mononuclear cell isolation, and the harvesting and processing of cells, bacteria, yeast, algae, and other microorganisms.
Operational Features and Legacy Compatibility
For repeatable routine setups, the system includes an intuitive control panel featuring a program key and storage for up to 35 user programs, according to the release. Additional ergonomic and handling features include a low access height, a Soft Touch Lid for comfortable closing, QuickLock rotor lids and caps for secure handling, and quiet operation intended to support a focused laboratory environment, Eppendorf reports.
To preserve existing laboratory equipment investments, the Centrifuge 5811 R maintains compatibility with 16 of the 17 rotors developed for the Centrifuge 5810 R, according to the company. Eppendorf reports that multiple equipment bundles are available to meet varied laboratory requirements.
