The new X2 and S2 Series expands Thermo Fisher Scientific’s refrigerated centrifuge lineup with natural refrigerant cooling.


Thermo Fisher Scientific introduced the Thermo Scientific X2 and S2 Series Centrifuges, designed to provide clinical labs and medical research facilities with high performance and improved sustainability. According to the company, the new models complete the industry’s first refrigerated centrifuge portfolio to feature natural refrigerant cooling systems.

The new series utilizes GreenCool Technology, a natural refrigerant with a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of 3. This system is compliant with European Union and US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) F-gas regulations. The units are manufactured at a certified zero-waste facility powered by 100% renewable electricity and offer increased energy efficiency compared to previous models.

“At Thermo Fisher, sustainability and performance aren’t separate goals,” says Noreen Hong, vice president and general manager of growth, protection and separation at Thermo Fisher Scientific, in a release. “The X2 and S2 Series centrifuges reflect that approach by combining natural refrigerant cooling systems with the performance, rotor flexibility and ease of use customers need for demanding work in medical research, biopharma and clinical diagnostics.”

Performance and Versatility

The centrifuges offer a maximum capacity of 1.6 liters per run in a smaller footprint than the 4-liter X4 and S4 models, providing more versatility for various lab setups. Fixed-angle rotors deliver speeds over 25,000 x g, while swinging bucket rotors exceed 7,000 x g to complete separations for challenging samples.

The X Series supports up to 18 optional rotors and the S Series supports up to 15, including Fiberlite carbon fiber options. These configurations support a range of applications, including cell culture, bioproduction, molecular biology, and clinical diagnostics.

Safety and Operational Efficiency

For lab efficiency, the units include the Auto-Lock Rotor Exchange, which allows for rotor changes in under three seconds. They also feature ClickSeal Biocontainment Lids for one-handed, glove-friendly operation.

The series is available in ventilated and refrigerated models. In addition to general use models, Thermo Fisher Scientific offers in vitro diagnostics (IVD) and medical device (MD) models to meet specific operational and compliance requirements in clinical settings. The refrigerated models feature enhanced temperature control with an expanded range down to -20°C, reflecting a broader trend in laboratory cooling technology.
