Hybrid tubes from Micronic America, Aston, Penn, are designed with special features for the storage of fresh-frozen tissue samples. The tubes come in sizes of 1.5 mL and 3 mL with external thread. The uniform tissue storage products enable biobanks to standardize and automate the handling and storage of tissue samples in the same way as liquid samples. As a result, the chance of mixing up tissue biopsy samples during handling is minimized, while sample integrity during storage is maximized.

The tissue tubes feature a wide opening for easy loading, and they are shallow to allow the removal of tissue samples with tweezers. Various sizes of tissue samples can be stored in the tubes. An optional transparent cap facilitates visual checks of enclosed tissue. The tubes are provided with a 2D datamatrix code on the bottom and a numeric human-readable code on the tube side wall. The white blank side surface of the tubes allows researchers to write on them or use a laser for specific identification codes. Available in a 1D barcoded ultralow temperature rack based on the automation-friendly ANSI/SLAS rack format, the tissue tubes guarantee absolute traceability.

The high-contrast 2D and human-readable codes are permanently laser-etched into the white surfaces so that they can never wear or fall off. Additionally, the bottom code surface features a raised edge, which protects the 2D datamatrix code against accidental scratches. The white bottom and tube walls cannot be separated from the transparent tube because of Micronic’s unique two-component injection molding technique.

In addition, the external thread eliminates the possibility of jammed tissue pieces in the screw thread, while the tubes’ triple thread ensures an excellent closure and horizontal placement of the cap. The thick walls give the tube a sturdy design and excellent properties for ultralow temperature storage. In addition to storage, the flat-bottomed tubes can also be used for secure transportation of tissue samples.

Micronic’s products are manufactured in a certified Class 7 cleanroom environment at facilities in both the Netherlands and the United States. Micronic’s labware equipment is also assembled in-house. The tissue tubes are made from medically approved polypropylene. They are free of RNase/DNase and pyrogens.
