The BD FACSCanto™ II flow cytometry system from BD Biosciences, Franklin Lakes, NJ, offers clinical laboratories an FDA-cleared cell analyzer for in vitro diagnostic (IVD) use. This new benchtop analyzer supports the first six-color flow cytometry IVD application for routine HIV/AIDS monitoring using a highly efficient one-tube test. The system offers a range of turnkey IVD applications, as well as the flexibility and performance required for complex life science and clinical research applications, such as an optional eight-color configuration. It also assists laboratories in achieving data quickly and efficiently, offering users high-fluorescence sensitivity, industry-leading low sample carryover of less than 0.1% between tests, and processing speeds of up to 10,000 events per second.

The Beckman Coulter, Fullerton, Calif, FC 500 with IM 8.05 software is a specially designed device driver for the widely used Data Innovations Instrument Manager (IM) 8.05 that enables bidirectional information delivery to and from the FC 500 Flow Cytometer. The new driver allows automation of the entire process, from sample receipt to reportable result. The system creates an external worklist that includes test requests and patient demographic information. The IM 8.05 software tracks each sample throughout the process to reduce labor requirements and errors, and helps users meet CAP and JCAHO patient safety goals. It also features advanced decision rules capabilities that significantly increase lab productivity and graphics that can be reviewed and transferred to the LIS along with relevant results.

The Thermo Scientific Diluent 2 reagent, by Thermo Fisher Scientific, East Providence, RI, can be used as a sheath fluid that works on all flow cytometer systems. It is a ready-to-use reagent with no detergents added and an antimicrobial additive that keeps reagent purity constant. Ideal for hospitals and research facilities, the Diluent 2 has been designed as a cost-saving alternative to manufacturers’ reagents. It is packaged in a 20L Cubitainer® and has an 18-month shelf life.

iCyt Reflection System
High-speed parallel sorting
The iCyt® Reflection® System from iCyt, Champaign, Ill, can include up to four high-performance cell sorters into the same footprint of one traditional instrument. The system’s modular components are easily reconfigured and shared among the sorters to maximize capability, flexibility, and utility at minimal cost. Fluorescence can be collected from each sort module and fed to up to 48 photomultiplier tubes or other specialized detectors. High-speed parallel sorting with multiple sort modules can exceed typical sort-collection rates. The highly automated sort modules can be contained inside an optional Baker biological safety cabinet, protecting samples, products, and operators from contamination.

Assayed control for immunophenotyping
CD-Chex Plus BC, from Streck, Omaha, Neb, is an assayed control for immunophenotyping with Beckman Coulter® flow cytometry systems that determines the accuracy and reproducibility of all the steps involved in the process of immunophenotyping, including red blood cell lysis. Reference values for five subsets of leukocytes include: T lymphocytes, B lymphocytes, granulocytes, monocytes, and NK cells. The control offers a depressed CD4 absolute number often indicated in patients with immunodeficiency diseases. Streck offers users 30-day open-vial stability and up to 90-day closed-vial stability. It is packaged in plastic vials with pierceable caps containing a 3.0-mL fill.

It recently received FDA clearance to preserve peripheral blood, including HIV-infected patient samples, for up to 14 days at room temperature. The preservative contained in Cyto-Chex BCT maintains the integrity of the white blood cell cluster of differentiation markers for up to 7 days. Patient samples are stable at room temperature for convenient transport and storage.
For preservation and transport of patient samples
Cell Preservative, formerly Cyto-Chex, from Streck, Omaha, Neb, maintains the integrity of white blood cell antigenic sites for preservation and transport of patient samples. Bone marrow aspirates and tissue samples treated with Cell Preservative are stable for up to 7 days prior to analysis by flow cytometry, allowing for convenient transport and storage. The preservative offers 1-year closed-vial stability.
CD-Chex Plus from Streck, Omaha, Neb, is an assayed control for monitoring immunophenotyping by flow cytometry that determines the accuracy and reproducibility of all the steps involved in the process of immunophenotyping, including red blood cell lysis. Reference values for five subsets of leukocytes include: T lymphocytes, B lymphocytes, granulocytes, monocytes, and NK cells. CD-Chex Plus is assayed for normal levels of CD34+ cells found in peripheral blood, and offers a depressed CD4 absolute number, often indicated in patients with immunodeficiency diseases. Compatible with most popular flow cytometry systems, CD-Chex Plus and CD-Chex Plus CD4 Low are available in 2.5-mL glass vials and 3.0-mL cap-pierceable vials. Both offer 30-day open-vial stability and 90-day closed-vial stability.
