The new capability helps clinicians determine if a patient’s infection will respond to gepotidacin before prescribing the treatment.
CirrusDx Inc now offers antimicrobial susceptibility testing for gepotidacin, an oral antibiotic recently approved for uncomplicated urinary tract infections. The susceptibility testing identifies whether the bacteria causing a patient’s infection will respond to the antibiotic, providing data to help clinicians decide if the treatment is appropriate before prescribing.
Gepotidacin is among the first new classes of oral antibiotics approved for uncomplicated urinary tract infections in decades, according to a release from CirrusDx. It works through a mechanism of action different from most existing antibiotics, which may make it a useful treatment option when antibiotic resistance limits standard treatment choices. As clinicians begin incorporating the drug into practice, patient-specific susceptibility data can support prescribing decisions.
“Diagnostic testing should keep pace with the treatment options clinicians actually have available,” says Kyle Armantrout, CEO of CirrusDx, in a release. “Adding gepotidacin susceptibility testing to our panel means providers no longer have to make prescribing decisions for this antibiotic without supporting data. It’s a meaningful gap we are glad to close for providers navigating resistance challenges and for the patients depending on effective treatment.”
CirrusDx evaluates newly approved antimicrobials for use in routine testing and develops novel testing methods. Clinicians interested in gepotidacin susceptibility testing can contact the company for information on its infectious disease testing capabilities.
