BioTek Instruments, Winooski, Vt, has upgraded its MultiFlo FX multimode dispenser to facilitate cell biology workflows. The dispenser has a modular design that makes it easy for users to add functionality that benefits their unique applications.
One upgrade is the company’s new, patent-pending automated media exchange (AMX) module, which automates gentle, consistent media exchanges to protect and encourage cell growth, particularly for 3-D cell structures, including spheroids and tumoroids, along with loosely adherent 2-D cells. The AMX module eliminates the risk of cell structure damage or inadvertent removal, which is typically challenging when using manual methods. To accomplish the gentle media exchange, the module uses two autoclavable, peristaltic pump cassettes and specially designed aspirate and dispense manifolds, plus programmable flow rates and manifold tip positioning.
Another upgrade, the random access dispensing (RAD) module, increases flexibility in assay design. The module enables users to import custom plate maps for dispensing varying volumes to individual wells on the microplate. This functionality is important for many workflows, including concentration normalization assays.
The MultiFlo FX dispenser also has an available wash module that provides full plate and strip washing in 6-well to 384-well microplates, adding more functionality to the system. The MultiFlo FX dispenser is also well suited to automation, integrating with BioTek’s BioSpa 8 automated incubator, BioStack microplate stacker, and a wide range of other automated systems.
