Stat-Site WB, a dual-use whole blood β-ketone and glucose analyzer for professional use in the management of diabetes, from EKF Diagnostics, Cardiff, UK, is available for use in the United States. The CLIA-waived handheld analyzer reliably and efficiently delivers results within 5 to 10 seconds, and can be used in such point-of-care and certificate-of-waiver settings as physicians’ offices, clinics, and other nontraditional laboratory locations.

As a dual-analyte measurement system, Stat-Site WB can quantitatively measure β-ketone (beta-hydroxybutyrate) from both fresh capillary and venous whole blood in 10 seconds. In addition, the unit delivers quantitative glucose measurements in 5 seconds from fresh capillary, venous, or neonatal whole blood. Test results are reported on the unit’s LCD screen. Up to 400 results can be stored in memory, and can be downloaded using a simple mini USB cable.

The new system is simple and intuitive to use, as it is reagent-free, using test strips to which whole blood is added directly. The test strips are available either individually foil-wrapped or in a vial with a shelf life of 6 months once opened. The test strips are wide for easy handling, and a strip indication light on the analyzer guides insertion.

“EKF diabetes care strives to improve patient access to diabetes care diagnostics through the provision of affordable, easy-to-use technology, reducing the cost of long-term healthcare for the growing diabetic and prediabetic population,” says Gavin Jones, head of product management at EKF Diagnostics. “Having ready and efficient access to lab-quality β-ketone and glucose results at the point of care provides both practitioner and patient with the essential information they need to make clinical or lifestyle decisions in seconds.”
