Pathology Information System

Can be used as a stand-alone system for anatomic pathology

Orchard® Pathology from Orchard Software, Carmel, Ind, is a pathology information system designed to meet the current and future trends in pathology and handle the complexities of clinical, molecular, and pathology testing and reporting. Orchard Pathology can be used as a stand-alone system for anatomic pathology testing or as a complete system that includes clinical and molecular testing. The shared database used by these various diagnostic disciplines provides access to the patient’s entire history and enables the consolidation of clinical results to the cytology or pathology report. Image-management tools make it easy to link digital images, annotated diagrams, and scanned documents to case worksheets and incorporate them onto patient reports. Information on each report is stored in discrete data fields that enhance EMR integration and simplify the process to mine data for evaluations, correlation studies, quality assurance, regulatory, statistical, and many other management reports.

Monoclonal PAX8 Antibody

Designed for specific epitope targeting

Biocare Medical LLC, Concord, Calif, introduces a mouse monoclonal PAX8 antibody. The PAX8 mouse clone (BC12) has been designed for specific epitope targeting. The monoclonal PAX8 does not stain B-cells, cells of pancreatic origin, or neuroendocrine cells of the stomach or colon. This antibody also has lower nonspecific background staining as well as lot-to-lot consistency. PAX8 is a member of the paired box (PAX) family of transcription factors, which plays critical roles during fetal development and cancer growth. The PAX8 monoclonal antibody can also be paired with additional antibodies to increase sensitivity or for tumor-of-unknown-origin identification. PAX8, in combination with renal cell carcinoma marker (RCCm), stains more than 90% of primary tumors and 85% of metastatic renal cell carcinomas. For identification of tumors of unknown origin, PAX8 can be used in a panel with a CD10 antibody.

ERG-2 Multiplex IHC

Provides a unique stain that clearly visualizes ERG-positive PIN

The ERG-2 Multiplex IHC from Biocare Medical, Concord, Calif, provides the combination of ERG, a definitive marker of the TMPRSS2-ERG chromosomal translocation, and CK5, a key basal cell layer marker that identifies benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia (PIN). The TMPRSS2-ERG fusion gene has recently been found to be the most frequent gene rearrangement in prostate cancers, occurring in 45% to 65% of North American patients. Studies have shown a strong concordance with ERG-positive PIN in ERG-positive carcinoma in prostatectomies, with 99.9% specificity. The combination of the TMPRSS2-ERG chromosomal translocation in prostate cancer (identified by DAB), offers a rare, but definitive marker of adenocarcinoma of prostatic origin with the easy-to-recognize architecture of PIN, identified by CK5 (Warp Red). This provides a unique stain that clearly visualizes ERG-positive PIN and provides a unique opportunity to identify a potentially clinically significant subset of prostate cancer patients by IHC.

Eligibility Verification Software

Provides an estimated cost per test

To reduce rejected claims, payors and providers generally agree that eligibility and benefit verification should be performed on every patient prior to services rendered. Eligibility Verification from 4medica, Culver City, Calif, is a cost-effective way for organizations to validate coverage prior to ordering, and allows for payment collection by providing an estimated cost per test. By using specific insurance details (eg, copay percentage, deductible) to calculate the patient’s estimated responsibilities, organizations are able to collect payment before the submission of orders, and are able to report on all transaction details (per transaction, per facility).
