The program aims to help clinical laboratory professionals and pathologists use healthcare data to solve patient problems and improve lab operations.

The Association for Diagnostics & Laboratory Medicine (ADLM) has launched a Data Science in Laboratory Medicine Certificate Program, designed to help clinical laboratory professionals and pathologists use healthcare data to solve challenging patient problems.

The program provides training on core data science concepts through real-world examples, with participants learning practical tools to improve testing algorithms, reduce errors, enhance lab operational efficiency, and collaborate with data analysts.

“We are thrilled to launch this new certificate program for laboratory medicine professionals and pathologists who want to stay ahead of the emerging developments in data science,” says Dr Paul J Jannetto, ADLM president, in a release. “Our members saw the need for a professional program that would not only address foundational data science education, but that would also raise awareness of the value of data analytics in laboratory medicine.”

Addressing Training Gap in Lab Data Science

Clinical laboratories generate billions of test results annually, creating substantial datasets that could enable more personalized testing and treatment approaches. However, no training program previously existed to provide laboratory medicine professionals with a focused overview of data science applications in clinical laboratory settings, according to ADLM.

The new certificate program was developed by ADLM’s data science experts to address this training gap. The curriculum covers different types of data analytics and their applications in laboratory medicine and pathology, with content designed to enhance clinical impact for patients.

The program includes training on healthcare data security best practices and strategies for addressing laboratory data problems. Participants also learn about machine learning applications in laboratory settings.

Program Structure and Scope

The certificate program targets laboratory medicine professionals at all career stages who want to develop competency at the intersection of data science and laboratory medicine. The training provides foundational knowledge in data analytics while focusing specifically on laboratory and pathology applications.

According to ADLM, healthcare professionals who complete the program will be positioned to work effectively in a field increasingly driven by data and analytics. Cost is $515 for non-members and $265 for members.

ADLM represents more than 70,000 clinical laboratory professionals, physicians, research scientists, and business leaders from 110 countries. The organization’s community spans laboratory medicine subdisciplines including clinical chemistry, molecular diagnostics, mass spectrometry, clinical microbiology, and data science.
