The American National Standard Definitions/Characteristics of Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare (ANSI/CTA-1089.1), published by the Consumer Technology Association (CTA), defines terms related to artificial intelligence (AI) and associated technologies in healthcare, including “assistive intelligence, synthetic data, remote patient monitoring, and artificial intelligence-enabled diagnostic systems.”
An American National Standard is a document that has been sponsored by an ANSI-accredited standards developer, achieved consensus, met ANSI’s essential requirements, and been approved by the institute. The hallmarks of the process ensure that standards are developed in a manner that is equitable and accessible to all interested stakeholders.
In addition to the standard developed by CTA, a number of activities being advanced by the ANSI Federation are supporting diverse applications of AI, including standards from ANSI members and accredited standards developers such as the International Committee for Information Technology Standards (INCITS) and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).
