Dialyzer System

Larger surface area for sample exposure

The Ultra-Fast Dialyzer™ System from Harvard Apparatus, Holliston, Mass, comes with a chamber and two caps and features a double-sided, 24-mm-diameter chamber. The wider diameter results in a larger surface area for sample exposure and enhanced exchange rates. The dialyzer chambers can be used for a wide range of applications including electro-dialysis, electro-elution, elution of proteins and nucleic acids from gels, and electro-concentration. The system supports a broad range of membranes with molecular weight cutoffs of 100, 500, 1K, 2K, 5K, 10K, 25K, 50K, 100K, and 300K Daltons. The new reusable sample chambers are made of PTFE for high sample recovery. The units range from 50-µL to 1,500-µL volume.

Biothreat Assay

Detects potentially dangerous microorganisms

Abbott, Abbott Park, Ill, introduces the PLEX-ID Biothreat Assay, which is designed to detect and distinguish 17 different biothreat pathogens. This assay enables rapid and accurate detection of potentially dangerous microorganisms that could pose serious threats to human health, food, water, and other resources. The PLEX-ID Biothreat Assay permits analysis of direct specimens, such as blood, water, food, and air filter samples, and provides results in less than 8 hours. PLEX-ID offers rapid and broad identification, detailed genotyping and characterization, and recognition of emerging organisms. The system employs a combination of molecular technologies, including polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for gene amplification and mass spectrometry analysis to rapidly characterize known and unknown organisms. The assay is currently intended for nondiagnostic use.

Centrifuge Tubes

Tubes in 15- and 50-mL sizes

Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc, Waltham, Mass, offers 15- and 50-mL Thermo Scientific Nunc conical centrifuge tubes. Incorporating a new plastic rack design that is reusable, collapsible, and recyclable, the 15- and 50-mL tubes are offered with an environmentally friendly storage solution. The design provides a clean option for use in cell culture and biological safety cabinets by reducing any potential risk of particle contamination. The tubes also feature a large writing area, making labeling easier. The tubes offer a leakproof design that provides sample protection and are certified USP Class VI, nonpyrogenic, noncytotoxic, and RNase/DNase-free to ensure high-quality results. They also have a high RCF rating, which enables a broad range of applications requiring low-speed to super-speed centrifugation protocols.
