Pipette and Tip System

Light-touch dispensing and tip ejection

Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc, Waltham, Mass, introduces the new Thermo Scientific F1-ClipTip™ pipette and tip system. The system provides light-touch dispensing and tip ejection for ergonomic performance and reliability. The new manual liquid handling system adds a tip interface that improves pipetting comfort and consistency. The patented interlock design secures ClipTip pipette tips firmly onto the F1-ClipTip pipette, releasing them with significantly less force than traditional manual pipettes. The pipette tips have a hydrophobic inner surface to prevent liquid retention, while optional filter tips use the aerosol-resistant tip self-sealing barrier to reduce cross contamination.

Laboratory Diluter and Dispenser

Used for sample preparation

Hamilton Co, Reno, Nev, introduces the MICROLAB 600, a semiautomated laboratory diluter and dispenser for sample preparation. The instrument features a controller with an icon-based graphical touch screen for increased ease of use. Dilutions, dispenses, titrations, and more are visually displayed in real time. Methods can be stored, archived, and shared with the 2GB memory card. The redesigned syringe pump provides greater positional accuracy, allowing the programming of smaller sample volumes. The fluid logic enables the redesigned universal valves to be used in all dispensing and diluting applications. Users can switch from one task to another with minimal downtime.

Pico-Injector

Injections are delivered through micropipettes

Warner Instruments, Hamden, Conn, introduces the PLI-100A Pico-Injector for accurate femtoliter to microliter injections. Injections are delivered through micropipettes by applying a regulated pressure for a digitally set period of time. Pressure to the pipette is controlled through a multiturn regulator and is reported digitally for reproducibility. Injection time is set using an optically encoded circuit, which permits fine and coarse settings from a single knob. Control the timer via the panel push button, footswitch, or external trigger input. It has balance, clear, and hold functions. The pressure functions help to eliminate dilution and clogging, and allow the user to fill the pipette from the tip and hold suspended cells.

Digital Microscope Cameras

Feature a 7-megapixel resolution

Warner Instruments, Hamden, Conn, introduces its new line of ProgRes® Digital CMOS and CCD microscope cameras. The camera range allows for quick and precise setting of both specimen and microscope. The ProgRes CCD Research range of cameras feature excellent color reproduction and high-resolution images. The cameras offer a 7-megapixel resolution and are designed for image documentation and elementary image analysis. To facilitate precise focusing and positioning of specimens, a high-resolution, live image frame rate (up to 50 fps) is available. Sensitive CCD sensors, optionally available with cooling, offer high frame rates and a broad dynamic range, and facilitate smooth operation. Microscanning technology capture images of up to 12.5 megapixels, even in true color. All ProgRes microscope cameras come with ProgRes CapturePro image-capture software.

ElectroPrep Dialyzer System

Patented sample prep technology

The ElectroPrep Dialyzer System from Harvard Apparatus, Holliston, Mass, is a versatile patented sample prep technology based on electrodialysis. The system can be used for electrodialysis, electroelution, electrofiltration, electrofractionation, or electroconcentration for running a sample simultaneously into multiple molecular weight cut off (MWCO) fractions in as little as 3 minutes. It is designed for the rapid purification of proteins, nucleic acids, carbohydrates, and other biomolecules. With a run time of 3 to 10 minutes, ElectroPrep provides speed and convenience, even at very low currents (5 to 10 mA). The new reusable sample chambers are made of PTFE for high sample recovery and have been redesigned to provide larger membrane surface areas for even faster dialysis rates. The dialyzers are of 50 µL to 1500 µL volume, and can be joined with a union or one or two link chambers in different combinations and membranes.

LightCycler Nano Instrument

Low variation of well-to-well performance

Roche, Indianapolis, introduces the LightCycler® Nano, the latest addition to the company’s real-time PCR portfolio of LightCycler instruments. The 32-well instrument offers an innovative approach, both regarding optics and thermal control, which results in low variation of well-to-well performance. Instead of miniaturized disposables, PCR strips are used to further optimize the convenient handling of the instrument. These PCR strips are offered bundled together with proven, high-quality PCR reagents. The instrument and its software can be used with all computer operating systems, including Apple, Windows PC, and Linux.
