The CellaVision DM1200 finds and pre-classifies cells in blood and body fluids.

CellaVision is an innovative, global medical technology company that develops and markets best-in-class systems for the routine analysis of cell morphology in blood and other body fluids. The company has leading-edge expertise in digital image analysis, artificial intelligence and automated microscopy.

MANUAL DIFFERENTIAL — A DYING ART IN NEED OF AUTOMATION

Using manual microscopy for cell differentials is time-consuming and inconsistent, and when a consultation is needed, the answer may be days away. These drawbacks can be quickly eliminated by CellaVision Digital Morphology Systems that pre-classify the cells and display them in sharp focus, ready for analysis or real-time consultation with an expert.

In most Western countries, there is a severe and worsening shortage of Medical Technologists through retirement in the clinical laboratory setting. This issue is compounded when one includes those having expertise in blood and body fluid cell identification. A typical hospital may have between 15-50 different technologists who are responsible for performing blood smear reviews. Maintaining the education and competency of a staff of this size is a daunting task.

David Langstaff, Integrated Assistant Vice-President, Hamilton Regional Laboratory Medicine Program, Canada, found the answer. “Five out of six laboratories within our region perform peripheral blood cell morphology testing in CellaVision’s analyzers. We purchased CellaVision because we believed in the importance of being able to create a networked, centralized service for blood morphology which would help us address the growing challenges of skill shortages and cost pressures while preserving patient safety. We have met these goals along with the additional benefits of improving patient care through reduced turnaround times and improved detection rates of blast cells—patient care has been advanced!”

CELLAVISION SOLUTIONS — IMPROVING QUALITY AND REDUCING TURNAROUND TIME

Over 1,000 laboratories worldwide are currently using CellaVision as a solution to the universal shortage of hematology morphology expertise. Both the CellaVision® DM96 (over 50 slides/day) and CellaVision® DM1200 (15-50 slides/ day) automatically locate cells on a stained slide, pre-classify the white blood cells and pre-characterize red cell morphology for the technologist to verify. Our systems are designed to standardize cell identification between technologists, while significantly reducing the time spent performing smear reviews. Remote access to a patient’s images from any location allows real-time expert collaborations, improving turnaround time and streamlining patient care. The CellaVision Body Fluid Application utilizes a cytospin slide preparation, performs a preliminary differential and digitizes the entire sample area.

ON THE WAY — CELLAVISION IMAGE CAPTURE SYSTEM

In 2012 CellaVision will introduce the CellaVision Image Capture System (not yet FDA-approved). It is designed to utilize an existing microscope in the smallest labs performing 1-15 differentials per day. CellaVision software will assist the technologist to find, focus and capture cell images and then transmit them to a DM96 or DM1200 in a main lab at another location where the review is then performed.
