The BBL CHROMagar MRSA, from BD Diagnostics, Sparks, Md, allows microbiology laboratories to identify patients colonized with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) more quickly and easily than the time-consuming and labor-intensive traditional culture methods, and allows for the direct detection and identification of most MRSA within 24 hours. The medium utilizes a chromogenic technology, which permits the detection of MRSA using chromogenic substrates and cefoxitin. It also allows for the direct detection and identification of most MRSA within 24 hours, or at 48 hours with a confirmatory test.

Cepheid, Sunnyvale, Calif, offers its Xpert™ MRSA/SA Skin and Soft Tissue Infection (SSTI) test, for use with the GeneXpert® System. The test delivers rapid detection of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Staphylococcus aureus (SA, typically methicillin-sensitive) in skin and soft-tissue infections. In less than 1 hour, the Xpert MRSA/SA SSTI test processes specimens from suspected skin and soft-tissue infection swabs to determine if a patient is infected with MRSA or SA.
