ARUP Laboratories announced the passing of long-time colleague, Dennis Patrick Monahan, vice president for national contracts, from a massive heart attack on December 24, 2008.

ARUP President and COO Ronald L. Weiss, MD, MBA, commented that, “Dennis was an exceptional member of our team. But, beyond co-worker and colleague, I considered Dennis a good friend.  As so few people today truly do, Dennis clearly understood the importance of building and sustaining strong relationships, both personally and professionally. Our deepest condolences go out to Dennis’ family. He will be missed.”

Monahan was born on October 8, 1948, in Pasadena, California. The son of an Air Force pilot, he grew up in California, Alaska, Florida, New Mexico, and upstate New York. He served in the U.S. Army before attending Western State College in Gunnison, Colorado. After college, Monahan worked in sales and account management for several medical laboratory companies, ultimately making the decision to work for ARUP Laboratories as its first professional salesperson. Leaving a well-established laboratory to join ARUP in its infancy was a bold move on Monahan’s part.

“Dennis’ experience in the esoteric laboratory market and his professionalism clearly played a key role in persuading major clients early on to use ARUP as their medical testing laboratory. His humble, honest, gentleman’s approach was the opposite image most have of salespeople,” reflected ARUP CEO and Chairman of the Board Carl R. Kjeldsberg, MD.

Monahan was with ARUP for 24 of its 25 years and worked diligently in many capacities, including account representative, national sales manager, and most recently as vice president for National Contracts. He successfully maintained corporate relationships and developed new business with group purchasing organizations, integrated health systems, and multi-hospital systems.
