Abbott’s Labs Are Vital program is targeting college and high school students through the social networking Web site Facebook.

By using Facebook, one of the most popular Web sites among young people, Labs Are Vital is aiming to recruit college and high school students to clinical laboratory science through a scholarship contest and word of mouth between peers.

The Facebook initiative will enable interested college and career-minded high school students to meet clinical lab science students or recent graduates and learn about the benefits and challenges of the profession.

Other recruitment activities include a video that is being developed in partnership with the ASCLS, a mentorship program engaging both students and current professionals.

Labs are Vital is a multipronged, education and awareness initiative designed to highlight the critical role that laboratory professionals play in health care and to address the issues that labs face today. Abbott is joined in this effort by the ASCLS, the American Society for Clinical Pathology, and the Association of Public Health Laboratories.
