Symptomatic Lyme disease results from infection with Borrelia burgdorferi, transmitted by the bite of an infected tick of the genus Ixoides. Clinical diagnosis may be difficult, particularly in the absence of the characteristic rash, erythema migrans that often follows the initial infected tick bite.
Culture of the organism is rarely possible. Serological tests are the only laboratory methods readily available to assist in the diagnosis of Lyme disease. With this in mind, this company has introduced ImmunoDOT Borrelia DotBlot IgG and IgM tests.
ImmunoDOT Borrelia DotBlot IgG and IgM tests are designed to be run simultaneously and like other ELISA assays, use a whole borrelial antigen to screen. Like Western blots, the Dot Blot tests also detect antibodies to specific Borrelia proteins, thus improving diagnostic accuracy. Specificity of the ImmunoDOT Borrelia DotBlot has been demonstrated at 99 percent or greater in sample testing on 197 patients in endemic and non-endemic regions. Since these tests do not use the OspA as one of the indicators of reactivity, they can also differentiate between a response due to vaccination or a true infection.
