The floor-standing system features 35 rotor options, CO2-based refrigeration, and connectivity tools designed for high-volume laboratory separation workflows.

Eppendorf has expanded its centrifugation portfolio with the launch of the SpinPro 8 R, a refrigerated, floor-standing high-speed centrifuge designed for demanding, high-volume laboratory workflows. Serving as the successor to the Centrifuge CR22N, the new system is the first floor-standing centrifuge developed since himac joined the Eppendorf Group.

The instrument is engineered for biotechnology, pharmaceutical, and high-capacity academic research laboratories that perform cell harvesting, large-volume processing, and separations involving temperature-sensitive samples. The centrifuge accommodates batch capacities of up to 4 × 1.5 L or 6 × 1 L per run, allowing facilities to consolidate separation steps onto a single system rather than dividing workflows across multiple instruments.

“The SpinPro 8 R is about more than size and speed,” says Dr Tim Schommarzt, global marketing manager, Eppendorf Group, in a release. “It brings high-speed performance, rotor flexibility, easier day-to-day operation, sustainable CO2 cooling and connectivity options together in one refrigerated floor-standing centrifuge.”

Expanded Rotor Configurations and High-Volume Flexibility

To accommodate varying protocols and vessel types, the SpinPro 8 R supports a selection of 35 rotors, maintaining backwards compatibility with more than 30 existing rotors from the Centrifuge CR22N while introducing two new additions:

  • Rotor R5SS3 swing-bucket rotor: Operates at up to 4,700 rpm and 4,830 × g. Based on the Rotor S-4×750 from Eppendorf’s benchtop line, it supports diverse vessel formats using dedicated buckets, adapters, and compatible consumables.
  • Rotor R5A fixed-angle harvesting rotor: Reaches speeds up to 5,300 rpm and 6,110 × g with a 6 × 1,000 mL capacity. Compatible with 1,000 mL Nalgene bottles, it provides an alternative to 4 × 1.5 L configurations when standard operating procedures mandate 1 L vessel formats.

Both new rotors are backwards compatible with the Centrifuge CR22N, and a version of the Rotor R5SS3 will be available for the Centrifuge CR30NX.

Sustainable Cooling and Regulated Workflow Integration

The unit incorporates CO2-based cooling technology using R744 refrigerant, which has a Global Warming Potential of 1 and an Ozone Depletion Potential of 0. This setup aligns with EU F-gas regulations while providing temperature control across an operating range of -20 °C to 40 °C to safeguard sensitive samples.

For shared laboratory environments, the platform features a 7-inch touch display supporting 13 onboard languages, along with user management, saved run programs, and favorite setting profiles. Additionally, an integrated light line and distance screen allow users to monitor device status at a glance from a distance.

To address compliance and data integrity in regulated settings, the system includes an AuditSafe Mode, traceable run records, and software functions designed to support 21 CFR Part 11 compliance. The centrifuge also supports VisioNize connectivity and direct data integration with laboratory information management systems and electronic laboratory notebooks via standard protocols, including JSON-RPC.

The SpinPro 8 R is scheduled to become commercially available at the end of September 2026.
