In a new pilot program, the military will begin sharing its medical database with health care providers in the Tampa Bay, Fla, area.

Initially including about 500 physicians at three hospitals, the project’s goal is to eventually include more physicians and hospitals in the area. Department of Defense officials hope to expand it across Florida and the nation.

This is the first instance of the Pentagon sharing its health records with the private sector.

The participating hospitals will use some of the same software and devices developed for special operations forces to share data on active-duty personnel and retired veterans. The shared information will include prescriptions, surgical history and lab results.
