Surveyor

Mutation detection kit

Transgenomic Inc, Omaha, Neb, has released the high-throughput Surveyor Mutation Detection Kit for universal primer fluorescent capillary electrophoresis. It is designed to digest target DNA amplified with two universal fluorescent primers (included in the kit), labeled with either fluorescein or TAMRA, for subsequent analysis by fluorescent capillary electrophoresis using an ABI Prism Genetic Analyzer. Surveyor Nuclease, a mismatch-specific endonuclease, recognizes mismatches in heteroduplex dsDNA and cleaves both DNA strands on the 3-foot side of the mismatch site. It recognizes all base substitutions, insertions, deletions, and SNPs, including multiple mutations, in single fragments, low- copy mutations, and pooled DNA samples. Kits come complete with everything needed for mutation detection.

ß-Hydroxybutyrate

Ready-to-go reagent

Stanbio Laboratory, Boerne, Texas, has announced the immediate availability of a user-defined application on the Ortho Clinical Vitros FS 5,1 for their ß-Hydroxybutyrate assay. The assay is used for the determination of ß-hydroxybutyrate (blood ketone) in serum and plasma specimens. The major ketone body ß-hydroxybutyrate (~ 75 %) is not detectable with test strips commonly used for the detection of ketone bodies in urine. The Stanbio test is specific for ß-hydroxybutyrate, the predominant ketone body. It is not affected by interfering substances and shows a high linearity of up to 4.5 mmol/L. The reagent set requires no reagent preparation and is designed to be used in Reagent-Start (R1/R2) systems.

CoaguChek XS

POC anticoagulation monitoring

The latest development in point-of-care (POC) anticoagulation monitoring, the CoaguChek XS System has just received CLIA-waived status for physician’s-office use from the FDA. The new system from Roche Diagnostics, Basel, Switzerland, offers new flexibility and control, benefits that health care professionals can use to manage in-office prothrombin time (PT/INR) testing more effectively; and it performs onboard quality control in the reagent chamber, a feature designed to save time and provide enhanced confidence in the accuracy of results. The device provides precise results in just one minute from a small 10-µL drop of blood obtained from a fingerstick. Performing PT/INR (clotting time) testing at the POC allows health care professionals to make dosage adjustments and talk with patients immediately, to help protect them from potentially serious complications.

StatStrip

Glucose monitor

The new StatStrip glucose monitor from Nova Biomedical, Waltham, Mass, has received clearance from the FDA for use in neonatal testing. Severe hematocrit abnormalities are routinely found in neonates. The device accurately measures glucose and hematocrit on a single strip, automatically correcting for an abnormal hematocrit value in 6 seconds. In addition, its small 1.2-microliter sample volume is designed for the NICU environment where blood conservation is essential. The unit incorporates a patented new Multi-Well strip technology and brings to bedside glucose monitoring a high level of speed, accuracy, quality, and patient safety. In addition to hematocrit, StatStrip measures and corrects for interferences from acetaminophen (Tylenol), uric acid, ascorbic acid (Vitamin C), maltose, galactose, xylose, and lactose. StatStrip also eliminates oxygen interference to provide accurate glucose results, regardless of the sample’s oxygen status.

IgG and IgM Antibody Slides

Detects Anaplasma phagocytophilum

Linmed Biologics, Brea, Calif, a company known for producing viral IFA and EIA reagents, has introduced a new line of antigen slides for the detection of Anaplasma phagocytophilum by IFA. These slides can be used to detect both IgG-class and IgM- class antibodies of A. phagocytophilum in human serum or plasma. Human anaplasmosis, previously known as human granuloctyic ehrlichiosis (HGE), is an emerging tickborne infectious zoonosis characterized by headache, fever, myalgia, malaise, thrombocytopenia, and elevated liver enzymes. The genogroup including Ehrlichia equi, Ehrlichia phagocytophila, and HGE agent has since been designated as the single species Anaplasma phagocytophilum. In addition to the antigen slides, Linmed Biologics also offers a complete line of conjugates and specific antisera.
